The Household and the History of the Jews: A Series at Netivot Shalom, Berkeley
Is your Judaism defined as much by your Bubbe as it is by the Babylonian Talmud? Come learn with Professor Deena Aranoff about how Jewish practices, including rabbinic halakhah, are derived from household custom and unfold within the context of family life. This three-session class will look at examples of how Jewish culture emerges from the interplay between everyday life and formal Jewish practice. Class will meet in-person or via zoom at 7pm Pacific / 10pm Eastern.
February 4: Week One: Biblical beginnings: The maternal principle in Biblical texts
February 11: Week Two: Lessons from History: Conversas and Continuity
February 25: Week Three: Household and Halakhah: Tensions and Resolutions
The class will be offered in hybrid format, available in-person or on zoom. 7pm Pacific / 10pm Eastern.
