Would you like to take a deep dive into Talmudic literature, while also attending to its applications in everyday Jewish life? Please join me for a monthly, one-hour Talmud class on Wednesday June 24 at noon Pacific.  We will be studying the second chapter of Tractate Shabbat. Each class will include a close reading of a Talmudic passage along with the study of a single halakhah (law) that emerges from the discussion.

The Roots of Tradition: An online class with the 92nd street Y

Please join me for the launch of the 92Y spring series, The Roots of Tradition.

When: Sunday February 8 4pm Pacific / 8pm Eastern (ZOOM)

In this 75 minute class we will journey through the unfolding of the Jewish tradition over time. Where does it all begin? What are the roots of the Jewish tradition? What are its branches? What role does the household play in the making of Jewish culture, in ancient times through today? Together we will read classical Jewish texts that reveal the many places and people that provide the roots and blossoms of the Jewish tradition.

We will be studying the second chapter of Tractate Shabbat. Each class will include a close reading of a Talmudic passage along with the study of a single halakhah (law) that emerges from the discussion.

The Household and the History of the Jews: A Series at Netivot Shalom, Berkeley

Is your Judaism defined as much by your Bubbe as it is by the Babylonian Talmud?  Come learn with Professor Deena Aranoff about how Jewish practices, including rabbinic halakhah, are derived from household custom and unfold within the context of family life. This three-session class will look at examples of how Jewish culture emerges from the interplay between everyday life and formal Jewish practice.  Class will meet in-person or via zoom at 7pm Pacific / 10pm Eastern.

February 4: Week One: Biblical beginnings: The maternal principle in Biblical texts
February 11: Week Two: Lessons from History: Conversas and Continuity
February 25: Week Three: Household and Halakhah: Tensions and Resolutions
